Mac Mod - MMP mkII
042306: Mac Mod of a Mac mini G4
Mod by Peter Green

Peter Green's Mac mini G4 Portable Project Mod a.k.a. MMP MkII is truly outstanding. What do you get when you take an average Mac mini G4 and fabricate a new case, attach an 8-inch LCD screen, track pad, mini thumb keyboard and battery? The smallest Mac portable computer running Mac OS X ever! A truly outstanding and inspiring Mac Mod! - MMP mkII:

MMP mkII in all it's "mini" glory.

Even the most elegant and streamlined designs go through the "Rough & Ugly" stages. Here the track pad and thumb keyboard are wired, soldered and attached to the underside of the case.

A very good example of just how small the MMP mkII is compared to the average hand. Here you can see the tiny thumb keyboard, trackpad and screen view showing web surfing the on the net.

MMP mkII Quick Overview
- Time took to complete: Approximately 2 weeks.
- Most difficult part of the mod: Constructing/fabricating the case and dissipating the heat from the regulator powering the TFT 8-inch LCD.
- 8-inch LCD screen resolution: Default res. 800x600, but can go up to 1280x960!
- Average battery life: 3-Hours of Mac mini portable computing.
- Where'd ya get the parts from: Pretty much all the materials were found or recycled items.
- How much did the mod cost ya?: For the electronics, including the mini(!), total cost was £400 or approximately $700 for us Yanks. Not a bad price for the worlds smallest portable Mac OS X system.

I would like to commend/congratulate Peter Green for an excellent Mac mini G4 Mod. Check out Peter Green's MMP mkII Mac mini mod here in closer detail with many more revealing photos, specs and videos.

DONATE FOR A NEW "SUPERSLIM" mkIII VERSION!
Peter is also accepting donations for his new MMP mkIII Mac mini mod which is going to be "Super-Streamlined!"

If you'd like to donate to the project, Peter has plans for the MkIII Intel version that would be super light & thin, have a touch screen interface, superior battery life, run from a flash based drive, and any other goodies Peter can cram into the space!

Paypal donations for future research [note this does NOT give you shares or rights in the project, just the huge warm feeling you've made the world a better place]!

RISCX'S NOTES
MMP mkII is a wonderful Mac mini mod. I would love to see integration of the MkIII include the function of being able to "Dock" the portable Mac mini into your Car's console system. Most people are docking their iPods into their Cars radio/audio system for music. Let take the next logical step and dock the whole computer into your cars system for music, navigation, videos, net connection, car's data logging, etc! I know people are putting minis into cars but haven't seen a simple/easy dock solution yet where you can "plug-in" and remove the Mac mini from your cars console for a truly auto/portable "plug-and-play" computing sytem.

Then I would also love to see some car application(s) developed which could data-log your cars performance on the fly and also "Tune, Interact, Adjust, Record" your cars ECU for displaying/changing:

- Fuel mileage, MPG logging
- Horsepower
- Torque
- 1/4 mile times
- Timing
- Lots-o-other measurements/calibrations as well . . .
