Product Review:
Everglide Giganta "Ray" Mouse Pad
Product review - EverGlide "Giganta Ray" Mouse Pad Review
(A pre-modded ultra-cool looking
blue glowing mouse pad)

A high-tech mouse pad that glows cool blue?

Unique illuminated mouse pad aimed at hard-core computer gamers and modders

Mouse pad surfaces are a big deal to the serious computer hard-core pro gamers. EverGlide is a company which has been making popular high-tech mouse pads and similar products with attention to acute surface and emphasis on durability for the gaming community since 1997.

I have painfully experienced the importance of a good mouse pad surface first hand myself.

EverGlide has just introduced a new mouse pad named "Giganta Ray," or simply "The Ray," which is aimed at the computer modder and hard-core gamer crowd. The mouse pad is based on the same design as their ever popular "Giganta" pad but with an extreme difference, six bright blue LEDs powered by a USB connection illuminate the translucent mouse pad which produce a stunning effect.

GETTING IT
The mouse pad was shipped and arrived from gamerzstuff.com in a few days. The mouse pad was snug and fit in a well padded box with ample amounts of styrofoam peanuts. The contents included the Ray mouse pad with attached five-foot USB cable and product sheet.

HOOKING IT UP
Even with the Ray mouse pad unplugged it looks pretty striking by diffusing light through its transparent "Polystyrene Tetra Polyethylene thermoplastic compound," surface.

Hooking up the EverGlide "Ray" mouse pad was simple enough, just plug-in the the attached five-foot USB cable to a USB port and Shazam! A cool-icy blue light glows from the pad. The blue light is bright enough to be seen easily in a well lit room or office setting, (chuckles). However in a darkened room the Ray pad really shines. It stunningly glows nice and bright but not too bright as to be a distraction or giving off unwanted glare.

USING IT
The obvious thing that sets this mouse pad apart from all the others is the six blue LEDs emitting light through the surface of the pad.

Okay, looks aside how does this baby perform? One big concern I had about the design of this pad was how the bright blue LEDs in the pad would work with optical mice, since light is reflected all over the place I thought it might confuse the optics in my mouse and give me erratic tracking movements. I'm happy to report that mouse tracking was smooth as butter. Absolutely no abnormalities to report using the EverGlide illuminated Giganta Ray pad. If fact I could swear that my mouse movements and tracking seemed to work even better getting more precise mouse movements for graphic design and fragging away in my favorite games as well. Heck, I even lost 3 pounds while using the illuminated Ray pad over the weekend, ok, maybe it wasn't due to the mouse pad directly but coincidence? I like to think not.

Light tends to add heat, so, another important concern was how much heat would be generated by adding light to the pad. The last thing a "serious" gamer wants is sweaty and slippery palms while mouse-wielding his favorite weapon of choice. Fortunately the use of the included LEDs in the Ray mouse pad provides no heat increase that I could measure or detect and did not produce the dreaded sweaty palm syndrome for me.

Underneath the mouse pad is a non-skid rubberized backing that keeps the pad in place, a perfect feature for hardcore gamers who sometimes tend to crank up their mouse movements under heated game play and the last thing they need is their mouse pad not staying put.

WHAT I LIKE
Glitchless, precise mouse tracking. Smooth mousing surface to reduce wrist fatique. And the biggy, one of the coolest looking "input" devices you can have on your desktop. A perfect addition to the hardcore-pro gamer or computer modder's desktop arsenal. The five-foot USB cable is long enough to place the mouse pad a comfortable distance from your USB source/computer.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
Not one thing. OK, the price is a little high but you pay for what you get, great performance and tracking in one extremely unique, very cool looking, designed mouse pad.

OVERALL/SUGGESTIONS
A simply outlandish looking mouse pad, which is now my main pad of use. Since the Ray mouse pad connects via a USB port I would have like to have seen the addition of one extra USB port on the pad itself making it a mini-hub. Hey, you can never have to many USB ports, right? Also a switch to turn the light off and on would be a nice extra touch but if you don't want your Ray pad lit up then just unplug it.
